Dental implants
An implant replaces a missing tooth with an artificial root placed in the jawbone and a crown on top of it. Unlike a bridge, it does not require cutting down the teeth on either side. When an implant is considered
- One or more teeth are missing, or a tooth cannot be saved.
- You would rather not have the neighbouring teeth reduced for a bridge.
- There is not much bone left in the area — bone grafting may be part of the plan.
Whether an implant is the right answer depends on the bone, the gums and the bite. That is decided after an examination, not from a photograph or a description.
How the treatment goes
- 01Examination and consultationA CT scan and an oral examination, then a treatment plan you can see on screen before anything is decided.
- 02Placing the implantAn artificial root (fixture) is placed in the jawbone under local anaesthetic. If there is not enough bone, grafting may be done at the same time.
- 03HealingThe bone integrates with the fixture. This usually takes about two to four months, and varies from person to person.
- 04Fitting the crownA crown made for your bite is attached to the fixture, and the bite is adjusted.
Healing time, the number of visits and whether grafting is needed differ from person to person. We will give you the schedule for your own case after the CT scan.
Cost and insurance
We do not publish implant prices on this page, because the fee depends on what your case needs — the fixture, whether bone grafting is involved, and the crown. Our published fee schedule is kept in one place and we will go through the figures with you at the consultation, before any treatment starts.
If you hold an Alien Registration Card
Foreign residents enrolled in Korea’s National Health Insurance (NHIS) are covered here the same way Korean patients are. Everyday dental care — check-ups, scaling (covered once a year for patients aged 19 and over), fillings, root canal treatment, extractions and gum treatment — is generally covered, so you pay only the patient share.
Cosmetic and elective work — veneers, whitening and most orthodontic treatment — is not covered, and implants are covered only in the limited cases NHIS defines. Coverage rules are set by NHIS and change from time to time, so please bring your ARC and let us check what applies to your treatment before you decide.
Questions we are often asked
Does getting an implant hurt?
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so there is little pain during it. Some discomfort afterwards is normal and is managed with prescribed medication. Tell us if you are anxious about the procedure and we will talk through what will happen first.
How long does an implant last?
With regular check-ups and good daily cleaning, implants are commonly used for ten years or more. How long yours lasts depends on your own oral health and habits, so no single figure applies to everyone.
Is an implant covered by National Health Insurance?
Implants are covered only in the limited cases that NHIS defines, so most implant treatment is paid by the patient. The examination, extractions and gum treatment around it may be covered. Bring your Alien Registration Card and we will check what applies before you decide.
How many visits does it take?
Usually several visits spread over a few months, because the bone needs time to heal around the implant before the crown is fitted. If you are planning to leave Korea, tell us at the first visit so we can talk about what is realistic in the time you have.
